About
Nazarbayev University (NU) has emerged as a dynamic research institution at the intersection of robotics, human-machine interaction, and intelligent systems, establishing itself as Central Asia's most internationally recognized engineering research hub. With a portfolio spanning rehabilitation robotics, motion planning, augmented reality, and human-robot interaction, NU's faculty and students are tackling some of the most pressing challenges in modern robotics and AI. The university has made particularly notable contributions to medical and assistive robotics. Groundbreaking work on compliant parallel mechanisms for ankle and gait rehabilitation, cited over 150 and 90 times respectively, has advanced the field of robot-assisted physical therapy by prioritizing patient voluntary participation through sophisticated impedance and assist-as-needed control strategies. Complementing this, state-of-the-art reviews on lower limb exoskeletons and wrist rehabilitation devices have become essential references for the global rehabilitation engineering community. In motion planning, NU researchers have pushed the boundaries of sampling-based algorithms, developing memory-efficient and dynamic-environment-ready variants of RRT* that collectively exceed 225 citations, demonstrating real algorithmic impact. Their survey on augmented reality for robotics—now surpassing 260 citations—signals leadership in human-robot interface research, while a comprehensive decade-long review of human-NAO interaction underscores a serious commitment to social robotics and autism therapy applications. NU's interdisciplinary reach extends further into underwater perception, construction digitization (Industry 4.0), sensor technologies for robotic hands, and soft material design through negative stiffness honeycombs. Supported by dedicated robotics laboratories and growing international collaborations, Nazarbayev University offers prospective students and partners a vibrant, globally connected environment where impactful, application-driven robotics research is consistently at the forefront.
